Effective feedback must overcome fight-or-flight instincts (Zhou)

Beyond the normal challenges involved in interpersonal communication, feedback can invoke fight-or-flight instincts because we may feel attacked by negative feedback. This makes it harder for people to parse and remember what you’re talking about.

Counter by making the listener feel safe. You are providing this feedback because you want them to succeed. Positive feedback is very effective at this; positive reinforcement can help motivate without being threatening.

Set the proper expectations to help create a safer environment.
