Great meetings make contributors feel safe (Zhou)
The whole point of a meeting is to have a discourse between multiple people. You want those people to feel comfortable engaging in discourse.
- Set expectations. If you want people to ask hard questions, tell them that and that you’re okay being under the microscope.
- Use structure to encourage participation. Everyone writes down ideas on stickies for a few minutes, then shares. Or each person take a turn explaining how they would make the decision.
- Manage equal airtime. “Sounds like John has a lot to say on the matter, which I appreciate, but I’d like to hear from everyone before we go.”
